The 22-inch Original Kettle is the grill we reach for when we want charcoal flavor without turning dinner into a project. Its 363-square-inch grate has room for a family cook—Weber rates it for up to 13 burgers—and the bowl-and-lid shape holds heat while the top and bottom dampers give you a usable range from a hot sear to a slower indirect cook. We spent time moving between direct and indirect setups, and the simple two-damper system was easy to read.
The daily win is the One-Touch ash system. A sweep sends ash into the catcher instead of leaving us to tip and scrape the bowl, and that small difference is why this grill gets used on weeknights, not just weekends. The porcelain-enamel finish wipes down, the lid hook keeps the hot lid off the patio, and the grate has held its shape through repeated cooks.
This is the charcoal grill we recommend first because it asks so little of you: no cart to assemble, no electronics, no extra fuel system. It is not the biggest grate here, so a big party is better served by the Royal. For family cooking, the trade-off is easy to accept, and the simple design is why we keep coming back to it.
Pros
- 363 sq in fits family cooks
- One-Touch ash system simplifies cleanup
- Simple two-damper heat control
- Porcelain-enamel bowl resists rust
Cons

We recommend the 22-inch Original Kettle as the default charcoal grill: its 363-square-inch grate, simple dampers, and One-Touch ash system make backyard cooking easy without extra gadgets.
