Most totes here hold water off with a coating applied to woven fabric. The Getaway Bag doesn't need one: the body is molded EVA, so the shell itself is the barrier, and a soaked swimsuit riding inside for an hour doesn't leave the outside damp. We rinsed ours out after a morning at the beach, wiped it once, and put it straight back in the car. That's the reason it tops this list — not a feature count, just the fact that the bag is the waterproof layer.
Fourteen liters sounds modest next to the 40-plus-liter bags below, but the volume is deep rather than wide, and it takes a family's pool kit: towels, goggles, sunscreen, water bottles standing in the corners. The interior zip pocket runs along one wall, which is where a phone and car keys live — separated from the wet, though not sealed against it.
What we appreciate most is how little attention it asks for. Sand doesn't cling to the shell, sunscreen comes off with a thumb, and the handles fold down flat so the whole thing slides under a car seat instead of snagging on the way.
Two things to know before you buy. It's rigid, so it won't crush into a suitcase the way the ESVAN does, and there's a single pocket inside. Give the handle fittings a glance at the start of each season, too; a stopper that works loose lets the strap pull free.
Pros
- Waterproof EVA shell, not just a coated fabric
- Rinses and wipes clean in seconds
- Stands open on its own while you load it
- Interior zip pocket keeps a phone out of the wet
Cons
- Rigid body won't compress into a suitcase
- Only one pocket inside
The one we take when the cargo is wet: a molded EVA shell that's genuinely waterproof, a bag that stands open while you load it, and a rinse for cleanup.
