Pull this cap down and it stays down. The A18 has more depth than most of the hats here — the cuff sits below the ear instead of resting on top of it, and the knit does not creep back up when you turn your head or pull a hood over it. It is a single one-size fit, but the ribbing stretches wide enough that it sits roomy rather than snug, which is what you want from a hat whose whole job is covering ears and forehead.
That depth is why it is our top pick: it does the unglamorous part of a winter hat better than anything else in this group. The knit is thick enough to blunt a cold wind on a long dog walk, and it survives repeated washing — it comes out softer each time without going baggy at the crown. We also like that it takes abuse. Stuffed in a coat pocket, sat on in the truck, dragged out again in February, it still looks like a hat.
It is a workwear hat and it looks like one, from the deep cuff to the small front patch. If you want something styled for a good coat, the FURTALK pom or the slouchy Vgogfly does that better. The A18 is the one we reach for first, and the one we replace with the same model when it goes missing.
Pros
- Deep crown covers ears and forehead
- Thick knit holds off cold wind
- Softens with washing, keeps its shape
- Stretch suits larger heads
Cons
- Stiff and tall until it is broken in
- One size only, with no way to cinch it
For most people in most winters, this is the hat to buy: deep over the ears, thick against the wind, and softer with every wash.
