Waterproofing is the number to start with, and this cover is rated to 12,000 mm, second in this group only to the Salzmann, across four layers: a rip-resistant face, two coated waterproof layers and a soft lining. That is more protection than a commute or a day hike asks for, and it is why we are comfortable sending it out for an all-day drizzle as well as a downpour.
It earns the top spot because it gets the two things that decide the purchase right at once. The buckle strap runs around the middle of the pack and pulls the cover tight, so it does not ride up when you walk into weather, and the whole cover stuffs into a pouch that disappears into a side pocket. Joy Walker also states the fit in height and width as well as litres, so you can check it against a tape measure instead of guessing.
Two things to know before you order. If your pack sits at the top of a size range, go up: a cover stretched to its limit rides up at the corners and leaves the base of the pack exposed, which is exactly where water gathers. And the fabric is light, light enough that a frame stay or a sharp buckle pressed against it will abrade over a season, so treat this as a wear item rather than a permanent shell.
Pros
- 12,000 mm rating, among the highest here
- Buckle strap keeps it from riding up
- Stuffs into a pouch that fits a side pocket
- Fit given in height and width, not just litres
Cons
- Light fabric can abrade against frames
We recommend this cover to most people: a high waterproof rating, a buckle that keeps it in place, and a packed size that disappears into a daypack.
