Three hundred sixty-one square inches is the figure that decides this one. Blackstone rates the 22-inch 1666 at 14 burgers, 10 pancakes, or 60 hot dogs, and while nobody is cooking 60 hot dogs at a campsite, the number translates into something real: a full pack of bacon down one side, pancakes on the other, and eggs going on as the first two come off. Four people eat hot food at the same time instead of in shifts.
That's why it's the griddle we send most campers to. Two H-shaped burners run independently, so one side holds finished pancakes at low while the other sears burgers, and the rolled steel plate takes a hard season and improves with it. Against the 17-inch Blackstone below, you get about a third more working room for roughly five more pounds — the trade most families are happy to make.
At 25.3 pounds it packs into a case a bit over two feet square and ten inches tall, which is a two-hand carry from the truck to the table and nothing worse. The rear grease slot drops drippings into a tray at the back, clear of your spatula, and that detail earns its keep: you're not chasing a grease cup across the table every time you push a batch of bacon aside.
Two things to know. The outer inch of the plate runs cooler than the middle, so season the edges patiently and keep pancakes closer to the center; and rolled steel will rust if it's put away wet, so scrape, dry, and oil it before the lid closes. Both are the price of a thin steel plate that heats fast and seasons into a genuinely slick surface, and neither has cost us a meal.
Pros
- 361 square inches feeds four in one pass
- Two independently controlled burners
- Rear grease management keeps the table clear
- Packs into a briefcase-style case
Cons
- Runs cooler along the front and back edges
If you're feeding three or four people from a picnic table, this is the griddle we send them to: two zones, 361 square inches, and enough room to keep a whole breakfast moving.
