The waistband sold us first. It is a wide elastic band that sits high, genuinely high rather than the halfway-up-the-hip version a lot of trail pants advertise, so it stays put on a climb and does not need a belt to behave. Then there are the toggles at each ankle: cinch them and the hem stops scooping up mud and gravel, leave them loose and you get a straight leg for town.
The fabric is the other reason these became the pair we reach for. It is thin, it dries in minutes, and it lets air move through. On a hot climb that is a relief; in a cold headwind you will feel it, which is the honest trade for a pant this light. Dust and dirt brush off instead of soaking in, which matters more than it sounds when you are sitting on rocks between climbs. Water resistance is the light kind: a splash or a drizzle beads up, real rain soaks through, and they are dry again shortly after.
Pockets are generous and zippered, so a phone and keys stay where you put them. Sizing is the one thing to slow down for. These are cut generously through the hip and inconsistent enough that the letters on the label are not a reliable guide, so order from the hip measurement in the chart and treat the elastic waist as forgiving rather than precise.
Pros
- Wide high waist that stays put
- Dries fast and packs small
- Zippered cargo pockets hold the essentials
- Ankle toggles keep hems clear of mud
Cons
- Water resistance fades in steady rain
Our default recommendation: light, fast-drying, and pocketed well enough for a full day out, with a high elastic waist that actually stays where you put it.
