The A/M-24's best trick is that it doesn't force you to choose between automatic and manual inflation. It's USCG-approved, carries 22.5 pounds of buoyancy, and converts to manual-only when you're paddling, fly-fishing, or doing anything else where you expect to get wet. That flexibility is why we make it the default: a boater can leave it in automatic mode, while a kayak angler can lock it out and pull the cord only if needed. The 90-to-350-pound fit range is also one of the broadest in this set.
At 16 ounces, it's light enough to keep on through a long morning, and the neoprene neckline is a small comfort detail we appreciate when the vest is cinched down. The adjustable body belt and front buckle let you snug it over a T-shirt or a fishing layer, which matters because a loose PFD is worse than a bulky one. We paid attention to that fit because an inflatable only works if you'll actually wear it.
Automatic inflators can fire from humidity or heavy spray, so check the cylinder and rearming hardware before each season and store the vest dry. The manual setting is the workaround for paddlers, and it's why this one suits both a boat cockpit and a kayak seat. After any inflation, rearm with the correct kit before the next trip. For a single PFD that covers most boaters and paddlers, this is the one we reach for first.
Pros
- Automatic inflation with manual-only conversion
- 22.5 lb buoyancy and 90–350 lb fit
- Light 16 oz build
- USCG-approved for adult use
Cons
No notable drawbacks to flag.
The A/M-24 is our default pick: automatic inflation for boaters, a manual-only setting for paddlers, and USCG approval in one vest.
