Seventy-five inches sounds like a lot of cord until a wet net starts swinging below a vest. That long safety lanyard is what first made the SAMSFX our recommendation: it gives you room to scoop without unclipping, then lets the net ride close again. The 8.8-pound magnet is strong enough for a wet trout net, and the 304 stainless screw is the detail that gives us confidence in saltwater. The carabiner clips to a vest D-ring or wader belt without fuss.
What seals it is the balance of hold and release. We didn't have to fight the magnet to pull the net free, and it lined up again without careful aim. The 75-inch length is more than a short chest-pack angler needs, but it is the right call for deep wading and a net that hangs behind the hip. Compared with the fishpond, it gives up some pull and reach, but it asks far less money and keeps the same simple two-part action.
For a day pack or a boat bag, that extra tether is the reason it stays rigged. It is the one we leave on the vest from the trout stream to the salt marsh, and the stainless screw means we don't have to baby it around salt.
Pros
- 8.8-pound pull holds a wet net
- 75-inch safety lanyard adds drop protection
- 304 stainless screw resists saltwater
- Carabiner clips to vest or belt
Cons
- Long coil feels bulky on a chest pack
The SAMSFX earns our recommendation for most fly fishers because 8.8 pounds of pull, a 75-inch safety lanyard, and stainless hardware make a wet net feel secure.
