Five point six ounces, a 500-size spool and carbon-fiber drag washers: that combination is what put the Zephyr at the top of this list. The body, rotor and cover are glass-fiber-infused nylon, the main gear is zinc alloy and the drag stack is carbon fiber, materials that usually turn up on reels well upmarket of this one. On a five-foot trout rod the outfit balances at the reel seat, and a morning of casting small spinners left us thinking about the fish instead of the reel.
The spool is the detail we appreciated most. It's machined aluminum and braid-ready, with an arbor shaped to stop thin braid from spinning under pressure — on a 500, half a turn of slip becomes a bird's nest of 6-pound line. Six shielded stainless bearings plus one in the anti-reverse keep the retrieve smooth without the over-lubed feel some budget reels have, and the 5.2:1 gear is slow enough to work a tiny jig and quick enough to pick up slack in moving water.
The drag is the part we came away trusting. Carbon-fiber washers give this reel more stopping power than 4-pound line can use, which is the right way round: you set the knob light, let the line be the weak link, and the washers stay smooth through a run instead of stuttering. For the water this reel is made for — small creeks, stocked ponds, a panfish bite on a tiny jig — that's the entire game.
The gloss-and-flat-black finish with the cutouts in the rotor is the sort of cosmetic work that usually costs extra. Here it just makes a modest outfit look like it was assembled on purpose.
Pros
- Carbon-fiber drag and 6+1 bearings at a budget price
- Balances a short rod at 5.6 ounces
- Machined, braid-ready spool grips thin line
Cons
- 500 spool holds only 40 yards of 6-pound line
For a dedicated ultralight setup, the Zephyr 500 is the one we point people to: 5.6 ounces, carbon drag washers, a braid-ready spool and room left in the budget for a second rod.
