A five-to-11-foot running range is the reason this is our default walleye crankbait. The Shad Rap 07 covers the water most of us fish on a typical lake point or river bend, and its tight balsa wobble gives walleye a steady target whether you cast it or troll it. We like that it does not need a fast retrieve to come alive; the bait has a compact, responsive feel that lets you slow down when the water is cold. The 2-3/4-inch, 5/16-ounce body is small enough for walleye without disappearing on a long line.
Balsa is the trade-off. It gives the Shad Rap a livelier action than most plastic baits in this group, and the silver finish is a straightforward match for shad and smelt. It also means the body is not the lure you bounce off every rock without a second thought. We treat it as a finesse crankbait rather than a bruiser, which is fine for walleye but worth knowing if pike keep showing up.
The VMC black nickel hooks are sharp out of the package, and the bait runs true at the speeds we use for walleye. We did not find a need to tune it, though any crankbait can drift off line after a few fish or a snag. The 5-to-11-foot range keeps the Shad Rap versatile enough for casting shorelines, working breaks, and flatlining over weed tops.
For a first walleye crankbait, or for the one you tie on when you are not sure what the fish want, the Shad Rap is the safest place to start. It is not the flashiest bait in the box. It is the one we reach for when we want a clean-running, proven profile that lets us focus on speed and depth instead of constantly fiddling with the lure.
Pros
- Covers the 5-to-11-foot band
- Tight balsa wobble at slow speeds
- Casts and trolls without fuss
- Proven shad profile
Cons
- Tops out around 11 feet, limiting deep trolling
For an all-around walleye crankbait that casts and trolls through the 5-to-11-foot band, the Shad Rap 07 is the one we trust first.
