Cooler Size Calculator: Check Bottles, Ice Packs, and Usable Space

Check two things separately: the space your items and ice packs occupy, and whether each item can fit within the cooler’s clear dimensions. A volume total below the advertised capacity does not prove that a tall bottle fits upright or that all your containers can pack together.

This cooler size calculator uses the outside dimensions and quantities of up to four item groups. It totals rectangular item envelopes, compares them with a rectangular interior envelope, and checks each item’s allowed 90-degree orientations. It is a shortlist and packing-check worksheet; it does not solve a complete three-dimensional arrangement.

Build a dimensions-and-volume checklist

Choose dimensions that describe the usable space

Use the interior width, depth and clear height for the exact cooler. Allow for a sloped floor, rounded corners, basket, divider and anything under the lid. A listed interior measurement may describe only one part of a tapered cavity. For a close fit, measure the narrowest relevant clearance rather than treating three catalog dimensions as a guaranteed rectangular box.

Download the source-linked dimensions (CSV). These are published dimensions, not measured usable volumes. The calculator keeps its preset in inches as the reference and converts it when you change units.

Measure the object you will actually pack

  • For a bottle, use the widest outside width/depth and the full height with its cap. Select “Keep height upright” when it cannot be laid down.
  • For a food box, include the lid, rim and clips. Only allow rotations that are practical for that item.
  • For an ice pack, enter its frozen outside dimensions and quantity. A flexible or bulging pack may differ from its labeled liquid volume.
  • For an unused row, enter zero quantity. An active row needs all three dimensions.

The bottle example uses a rectangular envelope around a round object. That overstates the object’s solid volume but gives an explicit planning convention. Corners and gaps may be shared when actual shapes nest; the worksheet does not determine that arrangement.

Read the two checks without combining them into a guarantee

Volume budget: interior envelope = width × depth × height. Item total = the sum of each item’s outside width × depth × height × quantity. The chosen unallocated percentage reduces the envelope budget. For inches, multiply cubic inches by 0.016387064 to obtain liters; for centimeters, divide cubic centimeters by 1,000.

Individual dimensions: upright items can swap their horizontal axes while keeping height fixed. Other items can use any of the six axis-aligned orientations. The tool does not test tilted insertion, the lid opening, compression or a shared layout for multiple items.

For example, a hypothetical 3 × 3 × 11 in bottle fails the upright-height check against the Tundra 45’s listed 10.7 in height, even though its approximately 1.6 L rectangular envelope is much smaller than the cooler’s envelope. Conversely, two 2 × 2 in square boxes cannot sit side by side on a 3 × 3 in base merely because their combined area is below nine square inches.

Budget cooling space explicitly

Add the ice packs or ice containers you actually intend to carry. An allowance for awkward packing is separate from that cooling load. YETI recommends a 2:1 ice-to-chilled-contents ratio in its ice-retention guidance, but this tool does not translate that into an equivalent number of arbitrary gel packs or a promised cooling duration.

A “cans only” count also describes a different load from cans with ice. The current Tundra 45 page, for example, lists 54 cans only. Do not treat that as space for the same can count plus a full ice load.

Use the result to narrow a purchase

A budget overrun means the modeled item envelopes exceed your chosen allowance; it does not prove the real shapes cannot nest. A failed individual check means that row has no allowed orthogonal orientation within the entered dimensions. If both checks pass, confirm the actual shared arrangement, insertion opening and lid clearance before relying on the fit.

Download the checklist to keep the dimensions, quantities, individual-check results and assumptions with your shortlist. The calculation estimates space only. It does not predict ice retention, food temperature or safe storage time.
