Fishing Line Capacity Calculator: Estimate a Different Line Diameter
Enter one known line capacity, its reference diameter, and the diameter of the replacement line to estimate a new capacity. The calculation holds the usable spool volume and packing conditions constant. It is most useful when you have explicit diameter-based reference data for the same spool.
If the spool only says “10 lb / 150 yd,” you still need the diameter of that reference line. A 10 lb label alone cannot supply it. Do not guess a diameter to make the calculator produce an answer.

Estimate capacity for a different diameter
Switching units converts existing valid entries. Example values are hypothetical, not a specification for a particular reel. Both diameters share the selected unit.
What to enter
- Known capacity: a length explicitly associated with a reference diameter for your exact spool. Keep the fill level and configuration the same.
- Known reference diameter: the diameter behind that capacity, not a diameter chosen from a generic pound-test chart.
- Replacement diameter: the labeled value for the exact new line series. The source-linked diameter chart is a starting point when your product is listed.
Do not enter spool diameter, line circumference, or a spool’s retail package length in a line-diameter field. For model comparisons before you have a reference diameter, start with the spinning reel size chart.
The formula and a worked example
New length = known length × (known line diameter ÷ replacement line diameter)2
A round line’s cross-sectional area is proportional to diameter squared. If the usable space and packing stay the same, a larger area per unit length leaves room for less length. The common geometric constants cancel in the ratio.
For a hypothetical spool holding 150 yards of 0.30 mm line, replacing it with 0.25 mm line gives 150 × (0.30 ÷ 0.25)² = 216 yards, or about 197.5 meters. The diameter is roughly 17% smaller, but the ideal capacity rises by 44% because the area, not just the diameter, changes.
| Known length | Known diameter | Replacement diameter | Ideal new length |
|---|---|---|---|
| 150 yd | 0.30 mm | 0.30 mm | 150 yd |
| 150 yd | 0.30 mm | 0.25 mm | 216 yd |
| 150 yd | 0.30 mm | 0.35 mm | About 110.2 yd |

Where the estimate becomes less reliable
- Braid: published diameter, compression, and cross-sectional shape may not behave like the ideal round line in the formula.
- Different fill levels: a half-filled spool or a different fill clearance changes available space.
- Backing and leaders: they occupy space. This single-line calculator does not determine unknown backing thickness or model a mixed-line fill.
- Packing and tension: tighter or looser laying can change actual length; the model assumes comparable packing.
- Rounded inputs: a diameter rounded on the package can shift the result. Extra output decimals do not improve an imprecise input.
Use the number as an estimate
Use the result to compare scenarios and prepare a purchase, then follow the exact reel’s filling instructions and check the finished fill level. The output is not a casting-distance estimate or a guarantee that a particular retail spool will fill your reel. If the known reference diameter is unavailable, leave the question unresolved rather than substituting a guessed number.
