The SF arrives as a system rather than a net. Alongside the laminated bamboo frame and clear rubber bag you get an aviation-aluminum magnet, a carabiner, and a coiled lanyard that stretches out to 100 inches, and the butt of the handle carries a 360-degree swivel ring so the cord hangs without twisting itself into a knot you have to pick apart with cold fingers.
That completeness is a large part of why we put it first. A 16.3 x 10.4-inch hoop is a sensible trout size — wide enough to scoop a good fish out of current, narrow enough to move fast — and the clear mesh lets you see the fly and the fish's head while you work out how to unhook it. The frame is the part we keep coming back to: laminated bamboo and hardwood feel warmer in the hand than aluminum, and they look far better than a net at this level usually does.
Carrying it is the other half of the job. The magnet holds the net flat against your back while you cast and lets go with a firm straight pull, and the long lanyard means the net can go into the water to land a fish without unclipping anything. The small holes keep modest trout from sliding through the bag, and the rubber coating means a stray fly comes out with a shake.
Reach is what you give up. At 24.8 inches overall this is a net for standing in the river, not for leaning out over a gunwale or a high bank, and the place to watch over a season is the lacing where the bag meets the frame, which takes the strain when a fish rolls. Rinse the wood and let it dry before it rides home in a hot truck.
Pros
- Magnet and 100-inch coiled lanyard included
- Clear rubber mesh is gentle and hook-resistant
- Laminated bamboo and hardwood frame
- Light for a wooden-framed net
Cons
- Short overall length limits reach from a boat or high bank
We recommend the SF to any trout wader who wants one purchase to cover the whole job: frame, gentle mesh, magnet, and a lanyard long enough to land a fish without unclipping.
